What is USA Class?
USA Class is an AI-assisted tool that helps agencies develop federal position descriptions (PDs). It supports PD drafting through a workflow that includes Position Details, Major Duties, Factor Levels, and PD Builder.
Can USA Class classify PDs?
No. USA Class assists with the PD development portion of the classification process and neither classifies PDs nor determines the final series, title, or grade. Managers are responsible for verifying the major duties and responsibilities drafted in the tool, and classifiers are responsible for developing factor content appropriate for the position and organizational level. Classification evaluation and justification must still be completed in accordance with federal regulations, OPM classification standards, and agency policies.
What type of AI is used for USA Class?
USA Class uses OpenAI’s large language models (LLMs) with a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) framework of cross-government position descriptions, JOA descriptions, and classification standards. The models are designed to align with OPM classification standards and are configured specifically for federal HR use cases.
Who can use USA Class?
USA Class is designed for Managers, Classifiers, Team Leads, and USA Class Admin Users. Managers and classifiers collaborate on PD development. Team Leads support intake and assignment activities, and Admins manage users, offices, and broader workflow access.
Who pays for USA Class?
USA Class is included as part of the USA Staffing license fee. Agencies may also partner with OPM’s Classification Strategy and Operations (CSO) group for expert classification support that leverages USA Class to improve efficiency, reduce PD development time, and enhance classification consistency.
What types of positions does the current release support?
The current release supports nonsupervisory 9-factor FES positions using one classification standard or guide in the factor workflow. Additional functionality is expected in future iterations.
Does USA Class support supervisory PDs, leader positions, mixed series positions, narrative standards, or wage grade positions?
USA Class currently only supports nonsupervisory 9-factor FES positions using one classification standard or guide. Additional functionality is expected in future iterations.
How are USA Class organizations and offices structured?
USA Class offices are aligned to agency organizational structure for access and visibility purposes. Agencies should follow the office structure provided for their implementation.
Where do I find training and job aid resources?

Will USA Class keep changing after launch?
Yes. USA Class is in an early iteration and will continue to be updated over time as new features, refinements, and support content are added.
